Reaching New Heights: TCS Student's Journey to Division III Track and Field Scholarships

Thursday, May 16, 2024

LTWLA proudly celebrates the recent graduation of Zayquan Groce from The Charles School. Zay, a standout in basketball and track at West High School, has had a remarkable senior year on the track, achieving personal bests in all his events:

  • High Jump: 6'2"

  • Long Jump: 20'9"

  • 110m Hurdles: 16.27 seconds

Leading as top in the state in high jump, Zay has garnered attention from Division III colleges such as Otterbein and Ohio Wesleyan University, both extending scholarship offers. Accompanied by Ms. Khilah, Zay visited OWU, where a recommendation from the track coach led to an inspiring campus tour. Despite feeling undervalued elsewhere, Zay discovered a newfound interest in OWU's diverse programs for first-generation college students. During his visit, he explored the campus, met with the head track coach, and discussed his aspirations to pursue mechanical engineering post-graduation.

While excelling in athletics, Zay remains steadfast in prioritizing academic excellence and personal development as he continues into his post-secondary education. Lead The Way extends heartfelt congratulations to Zay and wishes him success in his academic and collegiate athletic endeavors!

Zay was TCS's student representative for the A.M.P. youth summit and has attended multiple field trips to BMI Federal Credit Union, The Ohio State University and COTA. He completed the Lean Six Sigma cohort and is interested in trades/construction, but is gearing towards studying business in college while he runs track. We have made sure to give him career awareness and exposure by discussing different opportunities available and encouraging him to attend a variety of field trips.
