What started as a cold, mundane morning quickly turned to an afternoon of delightful views and adventure for the Horizon Science Academy students. The Franklin County Soil and Water Conservation District- Battelle Darby Creek invited our LTWLA students to learn more about water conservation efforts. Led by Ms. Amy, an enthusiastic Conservation Naturalist, students were taught what organisms are sought after when checking the quality of the water. They were then tasked to get their hands dirty, walking through the creek to net in any critters that may be a clue to the water’s status.
Ms. Amy provided detailed explanations of the sightings, broadening students’ understanding of conservation biology and hydrology. As temperatures warmed up, so did our students. They quickly took initiative; asking questions and taking turns holding organisms such as crayfish, frogs, and dragonfly nymphs. Students wrapped up their day in the Nature Center where they partook in interactive learning displays, learning the history of wildlife in the Columbus area. Thank you Franklin County Soil and Water Conservation District- Battelle Darby Creek and Ms. Amy for an afternoon of water conservation fun!
