LTWLA arranged for The Graham School to go visit Marion Technical College (MTC) to shed some light on a real college campus. Seven lucky students were accompanied by Coaches Alyson and Warda, and guided on a tour by three different MTC staff members.
Their first stop was an exciting foray into the Pillar Esports arena, which had its grand opening in 2021. It has 17 decked out gaming PCs, and the esports coordinator, Hana Cornell, facilitated a great bout between Team A and Team B. It was a great way for the students to see the tech that MTC has to offer and also discover how esports is an up-and-coming industry with many career fields. The students collaborated and really got into the spirit of the team exercise.
Next, Jay Schlater, the Assistant Director of Admissions and Recruitment, granted access to MTC’s most popular spots, which included an engineering lab with intriguing equipment, a nursing test room, the student center, and the library. MTC shares most of its resources with the neighboring campus of The Ohio State University Marion, and the youth benefited from learning about their affiliation and the concept of completing a 2-year degree with the intention of transferring to another institution. The students were impressed by the financial impact of a college path like that, as compared to going directly to a 4-year college.
Lastly, Jessica McCaully gave a presentation about MTC’s admission process and incredible resources. As an admissions counselor, her expertise was invaluable, and the students took full advantage by asking many questions. She spoke on the wide range of scholarship opportunities, giving sound advice on the topic of student loans. The students appreciated this outing because it illuminated a possible path to their own future, and LTWLA was so proud to make it happen.
