Lead The Way students from Groveport Madison High School recently embarked on an educational field trip to the Franklin Soil and Water Conservation District - Del-Co Treatment Plant. This immersive experience introduced them to the process of water treatment and highlighted a range of career opportunities across various fields.
The day began with an introduction to AmeriCorps members working with Franklin Soil. These representatives shared valuable insights into the program, detailing its structure, joining requirements, and the benefits of participation. They emphasized that AmeriCorps offers diverse opportunities beyond environmental science, sparking curiosity among students about potential career paths. The representatives also fielded questions and encouraged the students to consider the program as a steppingstone to broader professional opportunities.
Next, the students engaged in a hands-on activity that captured their attention and enthusiasm. They met a Del-Co employee whose work involves using drone technology to detect leaks in pipes and lines. The employee explained his role, the education required to pursue such a career, and how many entry-level positions offer on-the-job training with no prior experience needed. Students were thrilled to operate the drone themselves, amazed by its high cost and capabilities to provide aerial views for efficient problem-solving. This demonstration showcased how modern technology is revolutionizing traditional processes and opened students’ eyes to cutting-edge career options in the water management field.
The field trip continued with a guided tour of the water treatment plant. Students explored the various stages of water processing and learned how science and technology are applied to ensure clean water delivery. Employees from fields such as Chemistry, IT, and Biology shared their expertise, providing a deeper understanding of the systems and tools that keep the plant running smoothly. The tour concluded with visits to the control room and the on-site laboratory, offering students a behind-the-scenes look at the intricate operations of water treatment.
Before the visit wrapped up, a representative from Human Resources spoke to the students about the diverse job opportunities available at the company. They explained that roles ranged from those requiring a high school diploma to positions for individuals with advanced degrees. The HR representative encouraged the students to explore careers in this field, emphasizing that many companies are willing to train and support employees who show a willingness to learn. They also highlighted that some roles allow individuals to apply their educational goals in innovative ways, broadening their career prospects.
The students left the field trip with a wealth of knowledge and newfound excitement about potential career paths. Many expressed how much they learned and shared that the experience was both fun and inspiring. The visit underscored the importance of hands-on learning and exposure to real-world applications, leaving a lasting impression on the youth as they consider their futures.
