Empowering Columbus Students Through Community Initiatives

Writer's picture: Lead The WayLead The Way

February is here, and we’re celebrating with some incredible accomplishments from our students! At Lead The Way, we believe in more than just education—we believe in equipping students with the tools, resources, and opportunities they need to thrive in every aspect of life. Our recent initiatives have showcased the dedication of our students, interns, and partners in making a positive impact on their schools and communities. From hands-on leadership experiences to financial literacy workshops, here’s how our students are leading the way!

A Lesson in Leadership: Hygiene Kits for West High School

On January 31, 2025, West High School was buzzing with energy as Lead The Way interns Mi'Aira Jones and Ayailah McHenry led an incredible initiative to support their peers. With the help of their Mental Health Program Coordinator, they organized and assembled 900 hygiene kits—ensuring every student at West High had access to essential self-care items.

These hygiene kits weren’t just about soap and toothpaste; they were about dignity, confidence, and well-being. The project emphasized the importance of self-care and personal hygiene, reminding students that their health matters. Any remaining kits were stocked in the school’s pantry for future needs, ensuring continued access for students who require them. Mi'Aira and Ayailah’s leadership is a testament to the power of young changemakers, and we couldn’t be prouder!

Chasing Dreams: Miriam Camara’s ASVAB Journey

At New Albany High School, junior Miriam Camara is taking charge of her future—one library book at a time! Recently, she picked up a copy of ASVAB for Dummies at the Columbus Metropolitan Library to prepare for her retake of the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB). This popular study guide simplifies complex topics, providing practice tests and strategies to help students maximize their scores.

Miriam’s dream of joining the military isn’t just about personal ambition—it’s about family legacy. Inspired by her grandfather’s service, she’s determined to score higher on the ASVAB to unlock greater job opportunities and ultimately pursue a career as a Registered Nurse in the Army. With her proactive mindset and early graduation on the horizon, Miriam is well on her way to turning her dreams into reality. We are thrilled to support her as she takes these monumental steps!

On Your Mark, Get Set, Go! Julian Koroma Prepares for Track Season

For Horizon Science Academy junior Julian Koroma, dedication extends beyond the classroom and onto the track. After wrapping up his first practice of the season, Julian shared his excitement for competing in the 800-meter race—but he has his eyes set on a new challenge: the 400-meter dash.

“I feel like I could be a really good 400 runner. I’m already fast, I’m great at the 800, and the 800 is basically conditioning for an event like the 400,” Julian shared with confidence.

Julian’s passion isn’t just about speed; it’s about determination and discipline—qualities that earned him a spot on the Honor List and near-perfect attendance.

His commitment to excellence extends beyond athletics, aligning with Lead The Way’s mission to foster well-rounded, goal-oriented students. Through our programs, we empower students like Julian to channel their drive into success in every aspect of their lives. As he gears up for the season ahead, we know he’s going to accomplish great things on and off the track. Keep pushing forward, Julian!

Building Financial Foundations: Budgeting & Credit Score Workshop

Understanding money management is a critical life skill, and on January 29, 2025, families at Groveport Madison High School got a hands-on lesson in budgeting and credit scores thanks to PNC and United Way.

During the workshop, attendees learned practical strategies for managing finances, including the snowball method for debt repayment and setting short, medium, and long-term financial goals. The event also provided insight into credit reports, explaining the difference between soft and hard inquiries and how to properly request a credit score.

Beyond just numbers, this workshop empowered students and families with real-world financial tools they can use to build a stable future. The evening was packed with engaging discussions, expert guidance, and valuable resources to help participants take control of their financial well-being.
