Cornerstone Academy juniors began their semester with a unique self-reflection activity, creating You Boards—personalized presentations designed to help students connect with their peers and teachers. This interactive project encouraged students to showcase their backgrounds, interests, and aspirations while developing essential communication skills.

Sharing Stories: A Visual Journey Through Personal Interests

During their first advisory class of the semester, students designed slides featuring meaningful images of their favorite people, places, and pastimes. Presentations included:

  • Family & Friends: Personal photos highlighting the important relationships in their lives.

  • Hobbies & Interests: Favorite movies, sports teams, books, and creative outlets.

  • Cultural Connections: Countries of origin, vacation destinations, and memorable experiences.

  • Career Aspirations: Future goals and fields of study students are passionate about pursuing.

Each student took turns presenting their You Board, explaining the significance of each photo and answering questions from classmates and teachers. This activity not only helped students express themselves but also allowed them to develop critical skills in:

  • Public Speaking: Gaining confidence while sharing personal stories in front of an audience.

  • Active Listening: Engaging with peers by asking thoughtful questions and making meaningful connections.

  • Self-Discovery: Reflecting on strengths, values, and goals for the future.

Looking Ahead: A Semester of Growth and Exploration

This engaging activity served as the kickoff to the Self-Discovery phase of the Junior Advisory class. In the coming weeks, students will continue to explore their strengths and interests through personality assessments and lessons on multiple intelligence and confidence types. These sessions are designed to help students:

  • Identify Personal Strengths: Understanding how their abilities align with potential career paths.

  • Enhance Emotional Intelligence: Learning how self-awareness and empathy contribute to success.

  • Prepare for Life After High School: Gaining insights into college and career readiness.

A Strong Start to an Exciting Semester

Lead the Way member Yeniss shared a glimpse into her personality, discussing her favorite color (red), drink (Dr. Pepper), snacks (Kit Kats and honeydew), and hobbies (diamond painting). She also expressed her passion for pursuing a career in nursing, sparking discussions about career goals and aspirations.

“This activity really helped me feel more comfortable in class,” one student shared. “I liked learning about my classmates and seeing how much we have in common.”

A big shoutout to the juniors for their creativity and openness in sharing their stories. As the semester progresses, we look forward to seeing students build on this foundation of self-awareness, collaboration, and goal setting.

Stay tuned for more updates from the Junior Advisory class as students continue their journey of growth, discovery, and preparation for the future!
