Cornerstone Academy High School Hosts First-Ever Video Game Convention

Tuesday, December 10, 2024

Cornerstone Academy High School buzzed with excitement as it hosted its inaugural Video Game Convention. This groundbreaking event showcased the final projects of the Introductory Video Game Design class, where students displayed their creativity, technical skills, and passion for game development.

Showcasing Student Creativity and Talent

The convention featured an impressive array of video games, each uniquely crafted by the students after months of hard work and dedication. Genres ranged from platformers with token-collecting adventures to space-themed games featuring epic battleships navigating thrilling intergalactic adventures.

Some standout projects included:

  • A basketball video game that brought the court to life with challenging gameplay, where players had to dodge opponents and score baskets.

  • DragoBall, a two-player soccer-inspired game where colorful dragons competed in a fast-paced, imaginative match.

  • Space exploration games, filled with breathtaking visuals and dynamic gameplay.

  • And the winning entry, a “Sonic”-inspired game by 9th grader Shannon Howell, which featured seamless integration with an Xbox controller. Shannon’s game won 1st place, earning her a light-up trophy and well-deserved bragging rights for the year.

A Lively and Energetic Event

The event transformed the school day into a celebration of innovation and creativity. Students, teachers, and staff explored the games, interacting with each other and voting on their favorites. The room was filled with laughter, cheering, and the buzz of excitement as players tested their peers' creations.

While the competition was fierce, the sense of community and camaraderie shone brightest. Students enthusiastically supported one another, shared constructive feedback, and celebrated each other's successes.

Inspiring Future Innovators

The Video Game Convention proved to be more than just a showcase—it was a source of inspiration for the future. Many students expressed interest in refining their games or exploring more advanced courses in game design and technology. Under the guidance of computer science teacher Mr. Wolf, Cornerstone Academy High School is fostering the next generation of game developers and digital innovators.

Looking Ahead

The success of this event highlighted the talent and ingenuity of Cornerstone Academy’s students, setting a high bar for future conventions. With creativity like this, the future of game design at Cornerstone is incredibly bright.

Congratulations to all the students who participated, and a special shoutout to Shannon Howell for her award-winning game! We can’t wait to see what new and exciting projects these young developers create next.
