Students from West High School embarked on an enriching experience at Kitchen of Life, where they explored the intersection of social-emotional learning (SEL) and culinary skills. This unique program provided hands-on cooking lessons while reinforcing important SEL concepts, equipping students with valuable life skills both in and out of the kitchen.
Blending Culinary Arts with Emotional Growth
Over the two-day event, students engaged in preparing nutritious dishes such as squash quesadillas, smoothies, and parfaits. Each cooking activity was followed by a reflective discussion, connecting the culinary process to key SEL themes.
The word of the day, "competence," was explored in depth, emphasizing the importance of mastering new skills and building self-confidence. Students learned that just as they refine their cooking techniques, they also develop resilience and adaptability in their personal lives.
