Building Connections: Horizon Seniors Mentor Underclassmen Through Project Bridge

Wednesday, November 20, 2024

The division of Horizon into two buildings last year highlighted a growing challenge: the disconnect between upperclassmen and underclassmen. To address this issue, Project Bridge was created to foster meaningful connections and mentorship between the classes.

Project Bridge is a mentorship program where seniors visit the 9th-10th grade building every Wednesday from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. to provide guidance, advice, and practical knowledge to help underclassmen navigate high school successfully. The program focuses on equipping younger students with valuable skills, such as understanding the benefits of College Credit Plus (CCP) courses, applying for jobs, and developing the tools needed to thrive in high school and beyond.

Each week, the mentors present a new topic designed to address the needs of the underclassmen. This week’s topic was Work Etiquette, an essential skill as many students approach the age to apply for their first jobs. During the session, mentors shared practical advice on researching part-time positions, crafting resumes, preparing for interviews, and demonstrating a strong work ethic. “We want to make sure they’re set up for success, not just in high school but in the real world,” shared one senior mentor.

The program has already made a significant impact, building confidence in the underclassmen while providing seniors with leadership opportunities. One sophomore participant shared, “Hearing from the seniors makes everything seem more manageable. They’ve been through it and really understand what we need to know.”

Project Bridge continues to bridge the gap between Horizon’s buildings by creating an environment of collaboration, support, and shared growth. For more information about the program and its mission to foster connections and mentorship, visit Project Bridge 2025.
